[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At Simonsig, we take our commitment to sustainability seriously. As a family-owned and run winery in the heart of South Africa’s Stellenbosch region, we are dedicated to producing exceptional wines while prioritising environmental and social sustainability.
Our focus on environmental sustainability is reflected in our implementation of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) certification, which ensures environmentally responsible wine production. We have installed solar panels to produce renewable energy and reduce our grid-dependency and make use of a water catchment system to collect water on the farm and pump it to our dams. Instead of using harmful chemicals, we release specific insects for natural pest control. Recycling is a top priority, and our farm actively contributes to the Bottelary Conservancy, a local organisation that promotes conservation and sustainability.
We believe in making smart and sustainable business decisions that benefit both our winery and the environment. We use Kraft carton packaging for our wines, which is the most economical option, recyclable and made from renewable materials. Our use of electric forklifts is another example of our commitment to sustainability, as they are far more energy-efficient and produce fewer emissions than traditional farming machinery. By handling bottling, labelling and storage in-house, we reduce transportation costs and minimise our carbon footprint.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond economic and environmental sustainability to include social sustainability. We believe that our responsibility to sustainability also extends to the social well-being of our community. To ensure social sustainability, we adhere to the Wine and Agricultural Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) code of conduct, which ensures fair labour practices.
We provide housing and have a creche and aftercare centre facilities for our local community. Our estate has 50 staff houses, all supplied with clean running water, in-house sewerage, as well as subsidised electricity and refuse removal.
Our commitment to social sustainability reflects our belief in creating a positive impact on the world. We strongly believe that our actions can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to adopt these practices and create a better future for all. Our commitment to social sustainability also aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At Simonsig, we place great importance on social sustainability, seeing it as a critical part of our overall strategy. We firmly believe that it’s not just about producing exceptional wines, but also about making a positive difference in the world.
Our responsibility goes beyond producing wine, and we’re passionate about playing our part in creating a better world for future generations. Our commitment to social sustainability is a reflection of this belief, and we strive to lead by example.
By sipping at Simonsig, you’re not just enjoying excellent wines, but you’re also contributing to a better world. We believe that our success as a winery is intertwined with our responsibility to the environment and the community. Therefore, we aim to make a positive impact wherever we can, ensuring that we’re always giving back to the people and the planet that make our wines possible.
