Simonsig is proud to announce that its Kaapse Vonkel Satin Royale has been crowned South Africa’s top Nectar Cap Classique at the 2024 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge. Satin Royale, which was introduced to the Simonsig portfolio in late 2023, was the only Nectar to be awarded a Gold medal at this prestigious competition.
The award was accepted by Cap Classique winemaker Danna de Jongh and third-generation cellarmaster Michael Malan at the ceremony on Thursday, 19 September. In addition to this win, Simonsig also took home two other top medals: a Gold for Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2020 in the Brut Blend category, and a Gold for Kaapse Vonkel 2017 in the Extended Ageing category.
Speaking about the Satin Royale upon its release last year, winemaker Danna de Jongh shared, “In the glass, Kaapse Vonkel Satin Royale unfurls with a bright golden hue and a fine, lively perlage. Notes of freshly baked pastries and caramelisation are complemented by a sweet, autolytic richness with a toasted brioche character. The nose further reveals delicate notes of yellow fruit and white flowers. The wine offers bold flavours with a smooth, rounded palate. It harmoniously combines depth, a subtle hint of sweetness, and a sense of freshness, resulting in a beautifully balanced, captivating wine which elevates every moment of celebration.”
At the awards, Joaquim Sá, MD of Amorim Cork SA, remarked said the Cap Classique Challenge is more than a competition. “It truly is an annual celebration of the wonderful wine category Cap Classique has become since first made in Stellenbosch by Simonsig in 1971,” he said.
