[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Tucked away in the heart of South Africa’s Stellenbosch wine farm region, lies a winery that has gained worldwide recognition for its exceptional wines – Simonsig Wine Estate. Simonsig’s Cultivar Range is a unique collection of wines showcasing each cultivar at its best, celebrating the individual character and personality. Simonsig recognizes that wine is not just about taste, but also about the narratives and personality behind each bottle.
The Cultivar Collection brings out the best of the cultivars, not just of the vineyards themselves. It’s not about a sense of place, but rather about the character of the cultivar, showcasing the best of these exceptional wines. There is so much more to wine than just being a drink; it’s a story, a personality, and a heritage. The words behind each of these wines capture the distinctive character of each cultivar and bring the #SimonsigStories to life.
Let’s dive into each of these stories:
The Jamala Gewürztraminer is a beautiful and unique wine, with a rich and complex flavour profile. This intriguing cultivar is rare in the country, and Simonsig Wine Estate is honoured to share it with customers. Its perfumed fruit conjures up aromas of roses, lychees, Eastern spices, and Turkish Delight, all enveloped in a veil of subtle sweetness. The name “Jamala” means beauty in Swahili, and it was chosen as part of a social media competition that connected the cultivar with the people of South Africa and the Simonsig community. Jamala truly lives up to its name.
The Pick of the Bunch Pinotage is a classic South African wine, with a rich history that dates back to 1970. Simonsig Wine Estate has refined its winemaking skills over the years to produce world-class Pinotage, which thrives in the estate’s Stellenbosch terroir. This silky smooth and fruit-forward wine boasts flavours of juicy cherry and bramble berries, with hints of liquorice and sweet spices. Simonsig didn’t pick Pinotage; Pinotage picked them.
The Cape Fox Chardonnay is a wine that is as charming as the small and agile mammal it’s named after, which can be spotted playing in the winelands surrounding Simonsig Wine Estate. This exquisite wine has a complexity of flavors that appeal to both novices and connoisseurs alike, with a delicate balance of citrus and butterscotch notes that create a harmonious experience for the palate.
The full-bodied, silky-textured palate of Cape Fox Chardonnay is layered with ripe apple, roasted almond, and toasty French oak flavors that make it a perfect wine for pairing with seafood, chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. The wine’s texture is so indulgent that it feels like velvet in your mouth, leaving behind a rich and satisfying finish.
Cape Fox Chardonnay embodies the essence of Simonsig’s commitment to showcasing the best characteristics of each cultivar.
The Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshing and invigorating wine, named after the vibrant Malachite Sunbird that can be seen flitting around the Protea flowers in the vineyards at Simonsig Wine Estate. These vineyards are planted at the highest altitude of the estate, where the cool ocean breeze from nearby False Bay creates the ideal climate for this cultivar. Its aromatic tropical fruit aroma tantalizes the senses, while its refreshing gooseberry notes and zesty green fig flavours invigorate the palate.
Mr Borio’s Shiraz is a much-loved wine with a memorable history, named after a prisoner of war who made South Africa his home and contributed to the building of the first cement wine tanks at Simonsig Wine Estate. Alessandro Borio was an Italian prisoner of war during World War II who was sent to South Africa. After the war ended, he chose to stay in South Africa and worked for Simonsig Wine Estate. His unparalleled masonry skills led him to build the first cement wine tanks at the estate, which are still used today to produce this exceptional Shiraz.
