INFO ABOUT SA WINES

The Malan Family continues to play a role in natural resource management,

conserving the highly threatened Cape Floral Kingdom and their immediate environment on the Simonsberg foothills. Simonsig’s impressive wine range represents the full spectrum of wine styles available in South Africa and manifests our exceptional viticultural expertise of matching different varietals to their unique terroir.

“By understanding and addressing terroir and site-specific needs, we not only conserve the environment but also preserve the distinct character of our wines,” explains Francois Malan, Co-owner and viticulturist of Simonsig.

Besides the excellent plant material and fertility of the soil, Simonsig is endowed with quintessential terroir, which adds to the excellence of the wines. More than 70% of the 302ha estate is covered by lush vineyards and trees, while 16ha are set aside for the conservation and rehabilitation of indigenous flora, including endangered renosterveld and fynbos eco-systems.

Simonsig also see to the extermination of invading alien vegetation such as Port Jackson trees on an annual basis. These cleaned-up areas are then utilized for growing indigenous species including proteas and fynbos.

As a popular landmark and tourist destination, Simonsig also features a labyrinth vineyard as well as a Cultivar Garden, containing all the different cultivars of the estate. A Special Fynbos Garden, welcoming visitors to admire this indigenous gem firsthand is also forthcoming.
